Inspiring Futures: Jaybro Hosts Workplace Excursion Day for Raise Mentees

At Jaybro Group, creating opportunities for young people is a key priority.

Last year, Jaybro held a workplace excursion day that welcomed Raise mentees, giving them firsthand exposure to different departments within the company. The goal was to spark curiosity, encourage personal growth, and help students envision what life beyond school could look like.

By stepping inside one of Australia’s best workplaces—an honor Jaybro has held for four years in a row—mentees experienced a dynamic work environment where learning and collaboration thrive. The day was designed to be more than just a tour; it was an interactive experience that immersed students in real-world tasks and career insights.

Shane Alexander, Group Transport & Freight Manager, was inspired by the students’ curiosity, saying, “I love to see when the spark is lit in the kids. The immersive experience with all of the various departments gives countless moments throughout the day to engage each person.”

From the moment they arrived, Raise mentees were given a full view of Jaybro’s operations. They explored everything from the sales floor to the warehouse, met employees from different roles, and even got hands-on experience in the production area, where they created their own signs. The day was centered around themes like "Growth Mindset", encouraging students to embrace new learning opportunities and see potential career pathways they might not have considered before.

For Harrison Jarman, a Production Employee, seeing the students' enthusiasm stood out the most. “I really enjoy seeing all the students engaging in the different activities and asking questions, showing genuine interest in what we do.”

Interactive activities were a highlight of the experience. In the finance department, students participated in a role-playing game to understand the flow of money in business. The marketing and graphic design team shared their career journeys, while an AI demonstration showcased the Rodaro Driver Management System in action. Even cybersecurity was covered, with a lesson on identifying phishing emails.

Ensuring engagement was a top priority, and the Jaybro team made sure students were actively involved rather than just observing. Employees shared their personal career stories, many of whom started as trainees and worked their way up into full-time positions. This resonated with the mentees, who could see a tangible pathway from school to the workforce.

Kerrie Boness, HSEQ Advisor, found creative ways to get students involved. “Making the topic relevant to them and what interests them is probably the easiest way to get them engaged and talking. Asking them to identify hazards out in Operations got their interest... that is until they were provided bags of lollies by Dispatch.”

These workplace excursion days have already made an impact. Some mentees have returned for a week of work experience, exploring career paths in IT, marketing, and warehousing logistics. By offering real-world exposure, Jaybro continues to help young people see the possibilities ahead of them.

Through their ongoing commitment to supporting Raise and young people, Jaybro Group is not just introducing students to careers—they’re giving them the confidence to chase their goals.
